2011: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE AWESOME
Since we discovered Chris Guillebeau’s annual review, our new year’s resolutions haven’t been the same. This year we went all out, and took some serious time away to think about what’s happened with our business in the past year, and how we can make things better for the next.
It starts with a look back at 2011 — the things that went awesomely, and the things that didn’t pan out how we wanted them to.
HERE’S WHAT WENT AWESOMELY FOR US IN 2011:
- Found a great recycled fabric supplier.
- Wrote about 2x per week on our blog continuously.
- Built up readership and made a ton of new friends.
- Shannon went to WDS.
- Kristin went to the biggest trade show in the USA.
- We saw each other four times over the year — including an awesome trip to New York, an awful trip to Asheville, a random trip to San Francisco, and the photoshoot for the Versalette in Austin.
- Both of us quit our “day jobs.”
- We launched a super-successful Kickstarter campaign.
- We had a small part in spreading awareness about sustainable fashion and got people thinking about their consumption habits.
AND THEN THERE ARE THINGS THAT DIDN’T GO SO AWESOMELY:
- We got into one huge fight.
- We chose and trusted a supplier who couldn’t follow through.
- We didn’t invest in as many great professional services as we should have (and were let down often).
- We spent money on the wrong things.
- Had trouble setting a schedule and creating work/life balance. (Who says working in your pajamas is fun? It sucks.)
- Rushed into our Kickstarter, and probably should have prepared the details with our manufacturer more.
- Over-promised in terms of color selection on our Kickstarter; in the end, we were unable to use two of the colors we had originally chosen.
- We sucked at time estimation.
- Spent too much time discussing things on G-chat, and not enough time focusing on one task at a time.
We had a good year, overall, but there are certainly some lessons to take from 2011 to make 2012 that much better. For all you fellow entrepreneurs out there, we’ll be sharing the things that we plan to do better or change in the coming year on Thursday. Keep an eye out — we’d love to hear about your business goals for 2012! {r}

What a great post – my favorite section is the “awesome” one.
Here’s wishing you even more of that in 2012 and beyond.
That’s my favorite section too : )
Thanks, Chris, for the inspiration, the kind words, and the support as always.
You are already so far ahead by knowing what didn’t go well. I’m a huge fan and it’s been fantastic watching you guys grow.
Also can’t wait to start wearing this stuff!
You have been such a huge support for us in 2011, Ayngelina! We can’t wait for you to start wearing our stuff, too : )
Thanks for sharing the good, the bad and the ugly about being an entrepreneur! It helps those of us who are entrepreneurs (or, as in my case, those of us who are married to one!) know that we’re not the only ones who experience greatness one day and challenges the next. It’s all part of the adventure and learning from past experiences helps us grow! You all rock. I can’t wait to wear my versalette. Keep up the good work!
“Greatness one day and challenges the next” — great way to put it! That’s absolutely true. We’re so excited to get your Versalette to you — thanks so much for all the kind words of support, Becca!
Awesome. I love what you guys are doing and I can’t wait to start wearing my Versalette.
I agree with you: working from home sucks!
Congratulations on your accomplishments and your honesty. Here’s to a fabulous 2012!!
Thanks, Leslie! Here’s to a fabulous 2012 for you too : ) All the best!
I think the thing that makes the two of you resonate with everybody so well is how candid you are about your journey. You’re approachable. You have highs and lows and you don’t sugar coat how much work goes into what your doing. The fact that despite it all, you two fight through for what you believe in is beyond inspiring. And, the fact that you can asses your progress and setbacks and put it out there and learn from it, that’s the best. Keep doing what you’re doing. The positives (which I think are going to be more and better than ever before) will definitely outweigh the negatives.
Here’s to even better 2012!!! I CAN’T WAIT to see what happens! [and help if at all possible ;)]

Hehe! Working in your pajamas is not always what’s it’s cracked up to be, that’s for sure. Sometimes I envy people who shut the door on work, then drive home. I work All. The. Time.
But pajamas are waaaaay too comfy to swap. ;)
