How Fair Trade Affects You: A Video

Fair trade has been a huge part of our search for sustainable fabrics. It’s become more and more popular with coffee and chocolate, but the textile industry is still lagging behind.

When you buy a fair trade t-shirt, that usually means that it was sewn using fair trade labor. It’s a huge step in the right direction, but what about the workers who picked the cotton and spun it into actual material?

We found this video by FairTradeUSA (formerly TransFairUSA) that explains the process. As of last summer, they’re now offering certifications for apparel, as well.

If you’ve ever wondered about the term ‘fair trade,’ then take a few minutes to watch this. It matters more than you think. {r}

Video: "Real World Antigua"

Today we’re introducing our Guatemalan family and giving you an inside peek into our daily life here. Every single day consists of eating, sleeping, Spanish tutoring, and business planning. So, here’s the proof: it’s not all fun and games…

(Well, it kind of is.) {r}

Video: Two Gringos in Guatemala

I met Kristin in the small, colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala on Tuesday and ever since, the ball has been rolling. We wake up around 7am every day to tackle our business plan, determining our target market and marketing strategy. In the afternoons, we take individual Spanish classes with Jose and Karla, a couple who runs Latinoamerica Spanish Academy from their home.

On Saturday, we took the morning to visit the central market and browse through some of the local apparel, hoping to find inspiration for our own clothing line. {We have decided what we want to produce, but we haven’t quite figured out how. We’ll be sharing our ideas and plans this week — our big reveal!}

This is a short video of us in the markets of Antigua. {r}

Learn to Think Like an Entrepreneur

I love TED Talks. Forget TV, give me the internet and 20 minutes, and I’m happy.

If you haven’t heard about TED, here’s an excerpt from their site:

“TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference, bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.”

TED hosts annual conferences and supports independently-organized conferences, as well.

Their video site, TED Talks, has dozens of short clips, ranging from how companies market spaghetti sauce to how Chinese volunteers translate English websites.

Turns out that I just can’t get enough. I’ve been keeping track of the videos that strike a chord with entrepreneurship, so I can pass them along.

Some are just a few minutes (others longer) but none over 20 minutes.

Derek Silvers: How to Start a Movement

Cameron Herold: Let’s Raise Kids to be Entrepreneurs

Adora Svitak: Embrace the Irrational and Childish

Chip Conley: Do What Makes You Happy

Alexis Ohanian: How to Make a Splash in Social Media

Seth Godin: Standing Out

Rory Sutherland: Life Lessons From an Ad Man

Ray Anderson: The Business Logic of Sustainability

Richard St. John: 8 Secrets of Success

If you have any other favorites, I’m always looking for constructive ways to procrastinate… {r}

Video: How We’ve Found Our ‘Passion’

Without sounding like an eHarmony commercial, we think the internet is a great place to meet people. Really.

Just after our blog launch, web & social media coordinator Jessica Malnik invited us to do a guest video-post for her “Follow Your Passion” series. As a recent college grad just getting into full-time work and keeping up with her blog, she writes about all things Gen Y.

Here’s a link to our short video on her site — it includes our personal views on passion, and an impromptu adventure in Kristin’s backyard. Enjoy! {r}

Video: How to Cope with Change {Part 1}

Change is a funny thing.  You make a decision to do something big–and then, right before the change is supposed to happen, you get the notion to back out.  Turn around, walk away, and go back to your comfort zone.

Kristin talks about leaving for Guatemala in a few days–and her resulting anxiety. {r}
